Have you ever wanted to see a room of eager minds get lost in a book instead of being lost by a book? If this sounds like you, consider pursuing App State’s Master of Arts in Literacy Education to develop effective, evidence-based practices for teaching all aspects of reading and the language arts to K-12 students.
In our program — which features one of the largest collections of literacy education faculty in the Southeast — you will gain expertise in the practice and assessment of literacy instruction, enabling you to provide high-level reading/writing instruction and services to all students. Clinical settings, including online and in-person options, allow you to apply what you’re learning while working directly with App State’s Literacy Education faculty and readers and writers of various ages and abilities.
The program’s coursework is rooted in multidisciplinary research across the fields of education, psychology, linguistics, sociology and cognitive science, which, together, form the science of reading. Additionally, our courses maintain a deep commitment to ensuring literacy instruction is responsive across academic, linguistic, cultural and socio-emotional domains.
App State’s Literacy Education program can help experienced educators qualify for endorsements, promotions and pay increases. For those who have an Initial Professional License (IPL) or a Continuing Professional License (CPL) in North Carolina, completing this program can lead to earning an advanced M level licensure as a K-12 Reading Specialist.
App State’s master’s degree in Literacy Education is also offered fully online — learn more by visiting App State Online.
This is a program that can lead to licensure or certification in North Carolina. Appalachian State University cannot confirm whether this program will meet the requirements for professional licensure in other states or territories.
