The Master of Arts in Appalachian Studies program at App State presents the opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of our unique region. Additionally, you will explore the area’s environment, sustainability, leisure industries and business entrepreneurship.

This interdisciplinary program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Center for Appalachian Studies, a nationally recognized hub for all things Appalachian.

    Laws studied the history and social aspects of Appalachia. With that knowledge, she founded Pollen8 Inc., an umbrella agency for social programs to assist West Virginia families affected by drugs, and Cafe Appalachia, which employs people in recovery.

    Tsutsumi, of Osaka, Japan, exceled in the Appalachian studies graduate program — receiving scholarships for studies on local music traditions, winning prizes at old-time music contests and more.

    Alumna Profile: Robyn Seamon ’11 ’18

    Robyn Seamon combined a B.S. in nursing (RN–BSN) with an M.A. in Appalachian studies to provide cultural sensitivity training to the medical community through her own company, Appalachian Healthcare Training and Consulting.
