Explore identity, power and culture through an intersectional lens

The demand for expertise on gender issues is growing. Organizations in such fields as education, policy, health care, counseling, social work, government, law, journalism and human resources need employees who understand gender issues in the workplace — issues such as harassment, parental leave, pay equity and equal employment opportunities, discrimination and biases.

Through App State’s interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies (GSW), you will become a strong critical thinker, an adept researcher and a clear communicator with a deep understanding of problems focused on gender, women and sexuality in national and transnational contexts, and you’ll gain the analytical skills needed to offer creative solutions. The program emphasizes intersectional analysis and applied learning, preparing students to engage with contemporary issues in both academic and real-world contexts.

Both the graduate certificate and the 9-hour GSW minor enhance students’ main graduate program of study, and GSW program graduates are well-equipped for careers in education, advocacy, policy, nonprofit leadership and community engagement, as well as for advanced studies in the field.

App State’s Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies program is the oldest program of its kind in the University of North Carolina System and the second oldest in the state of North Carolina. Learn more about App State’s Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies Program.
